We sat down with Bloria’s Voice aka Morgan Storer, a 15 year-old musician from Illinois with a knack for writing creative indie folk.
Who are your biggest influences?
I think my top 5 biggest influences are probably Animal Collective, Phil Elverum, Akron/family, Incredible String Band, and Dwaal Troupe,
As of recently I’ve been listening to a lot more synthy sorta music, or more electronic-leaning than acoustic.
Really getting into Spirit of the Beehive after seeing them play with Animal Collective. Listening to a lot of Kitchen and Waveform as far as acoustic stuff goes. All really good stuff.
Your music has a lot of Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished-type sound effects, does that record mean a lot to you?
As of recently, I’ve definitely been using a lot more synths. I think Spirit has definitely influenced me a bit, but Animal Collective as a whole has really influenced me greatly.
It kind of opened up a whole new world of music for me. I got into some “weirder” stuff I guess after hearing them and it’s what made me really get into making music.
I love how Spirit uses abrasiveness to its advantage, which I don’t really include although I definitely have been influenced with the bouncy almost light synths that Spirit uses.
I noticed you like cassette tapes, do you record on analog?
No, but I’ve always wanted to. About five or six months back I bought a 4-track off some random person on Facebook marketplace to finally get into it. I took it home, and it was acting up a bit and eventually just stopped working altogether. Pretty sure it’s the motor. Eventually I’d like to get an 8 track reel to reel though.
What genre would you describe your music as?
This one’s hard. Before this new album I’d definitely say more indie folk than anything. With this new album, there’s definitely still folk elements but its kind of like indie pop/folk? It’s super spacy but I don’t know how I would include that in a genre name. It’s hard to really categorize it.
Tell us about your upcoming album for Primordial Void.
I started writing my album back in around late June. The only two songs that have made the final release from then are “Tulip People” and “Eucalyptus.” But all the songs on there are kinda like that, I’ve been recording on Ableton which is why the production is much better. It’s very spacey and atmospheric, but they still remain little short 3-minute songs. I’ve really been digging tulips recently, which is why there are so many references to them in all of my music.
Have any plans to tour?
I would absolutely LOVE to tour, but alas I am only 15 years old. I emailed a couple venues in Chicago in the past couple weeks, no responses though. Mostly just been playing open mics the last few months, but I would love to get a real gig sometime. I have a great English teacher I’ve been keeping in contact with that owns a record label (Jetsam Flotsam), and he has told me he may be able to help me with that. Hope that’s the case.
